Season 6. Hike #20 - Oak Island Nature Trail

Starting Location: Sauvie Island, Oak Island Road parking lot

Point of Interest : nature trail

Distance: 2.5 mile loop (lollipop)

Difficulty: Easy

Bathrooms: Portapotty

Parking: small dirt lot

EV Chargers: No

Dogs OK? on leash

Permit: You do need a parking permit from ODFW on the Island.


We picked this hike on our Anniversary, since we were in the area to kayak the Multnomah Channel between Sauvie Island and Oregon. There are several hikes on Sauvie Island, but I was having some foot issues, so we chose an easy, short hike.


There sure were a lot of signs on that sign post.
This hike goes along a small peninsula that juts out into Sturgeon Lake. However, you don't get to see much of the water on this hike. There is, however, QR codes designed by the local middle school to teach about Biomimicry.
Most of the hike is along fields, or through sparse forest, like this. It's pretty flat all over Sauvie Island, and the trail was dry, so it's an easy hike. Just watch out for the occasional cow patty on the trail. 









There is a spot near the tip of the peninsula where you can get near the water. You can also see 3 mountains from here. 2 of them are in this picture, St. Helens and Rainier. Hood is just off picture to the right.



We went clockwise (left) along the trail. On the way back, there is a small gate that you go through, and then we joined the main trail near this signpost.

This hike is fine, but next time I would chose a different one, preferably the Warrior Rock Lighthouse Trail. That trail is a 6 mile hike (3 miles there, and 3 miles back), and I wasn't sure about my foot making it that far.

S4 Kayak #7 - Olalla Reservoir

Our first time was during the 4th of July weekend, and it had been packed. Today, we were meeting friends, and bringing someone new to kayaking. We had planned to meet after 10am, but learned that the gate to the reservoir was locked, and that a ranger was supposed to unlock it by 11. I was expecting a long line of people waiting, but when we finally got to the gate, there were only 6 cars waiting, and the ranger showed up 10 minutes later, so we didn't wait long. The water level was much lower than in July, and I've heard that it usually gets closed in the fall at some point when the water level is low.
