This was our first trip to Sauvie Island. It was also our anniversary. We have not gotten out on the kayaks much so far this summer, and this was about a 2 hour drive from our house. Luckily, we had rented an Air BnB for our anniversary, so it was only about 20 minutes to the boat launch from Scappose.
The Multnomah Channel runs for about 21 miles between Sauvie Island and the Oregon mainland. We didn't want to shuttle, or be on the water that long, so we put in at the Hadley Boat Ramp with the intention of floating downriver for about an hour, and then coming back.
The weather was perfect, and we had timed our float to be right as the low tide was finishing, so that we might get an assist back upriver with the tide. I didn't really notice much of a difference.
There are a lot of house boats on the river, in clunps. There was also a shipyard that seemed to be taking boats apart, random sailboats at anchor, and lots of old logs that were once part of a pier, or dock, or something.

The current was pretty slow here, and the water looked kind of scummy. At least it didn't smell.
There were a few motorboats that were pulling skiers, and a jet ski, but they stayed a reasonable distance from us.
The view is pretty nice. We saw a few birds, herons, and not much else. It was pretty warm, and not much of a breeze, but there was not a good place to pull over to go swimming, so we just wet down our heads with our hats.
After getting back, we decided to go to one of the beaches on Sauvie Island to cool down with a swim. We drove to the other side of the island, which has pretty narrow roads.

The beach was cool to see. It is very long, with plenty of parking. We didn't swim very long, but it was a great place to get in the water.
I probably would not kayak this part again. It might be better on the North End, by Scappose Bay.
