Season 5 . Hike # -Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge

Starting Location: parking lot near entrance

Point of Interest : Wildlife (birds, rabbits) native plants

Distance: Variable (trail map)

Difficulty: Easy. Level packed trails that are maintained

Bathrooms: Yes, at visitor center

Parking: yes (under construction while we were there.)

EV Chargers: No



We actually walked here twice, on the way to and from Yosemite. We stayed in Willows, CA, and this is only about 6 miles from our hotel.

The Refuge has walking trails that are well marked, and also a self guided Auto Tour, which was closed while we were there, due to construction on the parking lot and access road.

The trails were still open, so we headed out early in the morning to beat the heat.
The trails are well marked, and maintained. There were many rabbits running around, and a wide variety of birds. We saw bees and dragonflies as well.
We did not take the auto tour, since it was closed. (It also has a fee.) The visitor center was also closed, so this review is a bit incomplete. There were maps and info available outside the center, and restrooms were open, even though the center was closed, which was nice.


This is a nice, easy place to visit for a nice relaxing walk. It would be nice to see it during different seasons.

Due to recent rains, the flow was pretty high, which made for  a lot of water coming through the falls. Alsea Falls is just a few steps from the bridge over the river, and we could hear it. S5. Hike #1 - Tryon Creek

  Tryon Creek State Natural Area  (First Day Hike) Trail Map Starting Location:  parking area by Nature Center Point of Interest  :   trails for hiking, biking, horse Length of hike:   Several trails, we did about 5 miles Level :  easy to moderate (mud, some steepness) Bathrooms :  Yes, flush toilets in Nature Center Parking :  Large paved lot, EV Chargers: No Our second, First Day Hike, this time at Tryon Creek. There were 5 hikes of different lengths and starting times available today, and we chose, of course, the longest and earliest. We had Ranger Nick leading us today, and he stopped occasionally to teach us about this particular forest in general, and a few interesting specifics. Here he is explaining about how loggers would cut holes in the trees for their platforms to stand on while they sawed the tree down. S2.7 - Trillium Lake.

  Trillium Lake is just past Government Camp, on the foothills of Mount Hood. The boat ramp area is decent, with a small loading and unloading area, and a pit toilet. There is a decent amount of parking, and we got there around 9am, so no trouble finding a spot. However, it got a lot busier as the day went on. There is a day use area on past the boat ramp, and that's where most people go who are just coming to swim. It's always nice to get that first glimpse of the water you will be floating for the day, but the view you get when you get to the bottom of the boat ramp is breathtaking. Everyone who comes down always stops to enjoy the view, and usually to take some pictures. During our time on the lake, I took quite a few breaks to just enjoy the view. And take lots of pictures. There is a day use area on one end of the lake, and a campground on another. A 2 mile trail goes around the lake, although part of it was closed when we were there.
